•  drivers miraculously escape serious injury

Two truck drivers miraculously escaped serious injury, yesterday, after their vehicles collided near Herstelling on the East Bank of Demerara.

One of the trucks, which was carrying sand, sustained massive damage, with the cab being ripped off from the trailer.

The driver who is from Herstelling sustained a broken leg, and was admitted to hospital.

The other truck was carrying molasses and suffered minimal damage.

According to reports, the sand truck was heading north when the steering mechanism suddenly snapped.

The driver lost control of the vehicle which slammed into the other truck, which was laden with molasses for Demerara Distilleries Limited (DDL).

Ten-year-old Herstelling resident Elijah Angoy said that after the collision, the driver of the sand truck jumped through his cab window to save himself. The mangled vehicle remained in the middle of the road for several minutes, causing a traffic jam.

Meanwhile, some residents who owned cattle and other livestock rushed to the scene to get a bucket or two of free molasses.

•  However, this came to an abrupt halt after an official from the DDL office arrived.
