Driver disappears after bridge plunge

BLOCKED: the car caught on winches on a pontoon below the bridge last night.

SAVED: the woman rescued by passers-by

AN UNIDENTIFIED driver disappeared last night after his car plunged off the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

But a woman in the car with him was rescued by passersby after the vehicle luckily got stuck on winches on a pontoon below the bridge.

Bridge officials told the Guyana Chronicle the driver ran his car off the bridge around 19:15 h near the retracting span.

They said it was clearly not an accident and when the car went off the bridge, the driver attempted to pull the female passenger overboard with him.

However, passersby went to her rescue and the driver jumped off the pontoon into the Demerara River, they said.

The number plate was missing from the vehicle but the Guyana Chronicle learnt that it could have been a car contracted to work with a taxi service in Georgetown.
The driver was missing up to late last night.
