Police still on trail of kidnappers

Police Public Relations Officer, John Sauers told Stabroek News last evening that the police anti-kidnapping squad was still working to free the 50-year-old who was seized from his New Providence, East Bank Demerara home early Monday evening. Sauers said that other police teams have been activated and ranks have not let up on their search.

Stabroek News was told that the kidnappers have contacted Sukhul's family and demanded a $25M ransom for his safe release.

Sukhul also called 'Michael Sukhul' a farmer/ businessman of Lot 4 Leonora Public Road, West Coast Demerara was taken by the gunmen while he, a female and two other employees were in his New Providence office.

The man's family continues to remain tight lipped about the incident. This newspaper managed to make contact with the man's mother Natenarine Sukhul yesterday and she said that she was being comforted by relatives and friends. She told this newspaper that she has heard nothing from her son.

Meanwhile, well-placed sources told this newspaper that the kidnapped man lived in England for about ten years before re-migrating to Guyana. He established a sawmill and also did rice farming for a while before turning to logging. Stabroek News was told that he operates a logging concession from which he supplies timber to a local company.

Police sources on the West Demerara told this newspaper yesterday that Sukhul had been the victim of a few petty thefts over the years and although these matters were minor he pursued them relentlessly.

In a statement on Tuesday police said that they were investigating a report that Sukhul was abducted around 6:15 on Monday evening from his office at Lot 3 New Providence, EBD by two men armed with guns.

Sukhul, the police said, was at his office with the female and two male employees when the men entered the office through a door which was not locked and held them at gun point. They tied the hands and feet of the female and the two males with duct tape, gagged the men and abducted the businessman. According to the police, several calls were made to relatives of the businessman demanding a ransom for his release. The statement added that in response to the report police have launched an investigation and the Anti- Kidnapping Team has been activated to deal with the situation.
